When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. What do you want with us, Son of God? they shouted. Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?

Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The demons begged Jesus, If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.

He said to them, Go! So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

Matthew 8:28-34

What is regarded as one of the most demonized men in the New Testament, the “Gaderene Demoniac”, was filled with a thousand demons.  While one Gospel records only one man, there is no contradiction, as Matthew records both, and the other only records the one with the most dealing.  Whether this man was actually the most demonized man in the New Testament is also hypothesis, as the number of demons in various people who were never converted is conjecture.  Also of note is that the phrase “demon-possessed” is a most unfortunate rendition of the single-word in the Greek, “daimonizomai”, meaning “demonized” or “under the influence of a demon”.  The English translation has the connotation of ownership in our version, which is not a part of the Greek whatsoever.  No matter how “daimonizomai” someone is, it is never a Biblical term to call them possessed or owned by a demon.  Even this man, in other accounts, fell at Jesus’ feet and worshipped, not the demons.  As afflicted, tormented, and affected as he was, He still had a sense of the truth.

Yet, for all that was on Him, for the legion of demons that had entered the man, they all left with a single word.  “Go!”.

Your life can change in an instant.  Your situation can shift from death to life in a moment.  Whether it is the moment of salvation in Jesus’ name, or the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, or God supernaturally intervening in a circumstance or life with His healing, delivering, and overwhelming power, it is His grace that shows up on the scenes, with no other explanation, with only His sovereignty to attribute it to.

No matter what a circumstance looks like, no matter how far out of control things seem to have gotten, if you can touch Jesus, and if He decides to have mercy, that is all that matters.

He is able to deliver (save) to the uttermost (Hebrews 7:25) those who draw near to Him.

For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost, and with Him is complete salvation.

It doesn’t matter how bad a situation has looked, or has been, only one word, only one touch from the master, and you are free.

It was after Noah had been in his boat for a long time that God remembered him (Genesis 8:1).  It was after Joseph had been in prison a very long time, many years, that in one day he was taken from the pit to the palace.  In just one day, God is able to turn it around.

For, when the fullness of time had come, He sent His Son (Galatians 4:4).  So too, when the fullness of time comes, in any situation, He comes.  He sends His Word yet again, whether it is a scripture, a visitation, a messenger, an angel, an opportunity, and He delivers to the uttermost those who have trusted in Him.

Abraham had hoped beyond all hope, and yet continued to believe, and so became the Father of many nations.  When all else has faded, and light appears to have departed, there is Jesus, saying, “You have kept true to my Word.  Here is your reward.”

Whether it is a deliverance, a healing, a lost loved one coming to Christ, or another breakthrough, the Lord is able, the Lord is able, the Lord is able.  He only asks us to believe.

And, just like that demoniac by the lake shore.  It didn’t matter what the opposition looked like, with just one word, with just one little word, they ALL had to go!

I looked up the word “come out” that Jesus used in His deliverances one time to look for extra insight into Jesus’ casting out of demons.  I found something most profound.  That word, in the Greek, means, basically, “come out”.  Jesus told them to come out, plain and simple, and they obeyed Him.

All authority, all power, and all dominion are His, and His is the Kingdom forever and ever.
