That Good Part
Your light, Oh, Lord, fills my soul. Your truth, permeates my being.
Lord, it is good to praise you, it is pleasant to meditate upon you.
My soul is consumed with longing for you. In the watches of the night, the day, I long for you. When can I go up to meditate upon you?
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke 10:42
For Mary chose the one thing that was needful, simply to be at your feet. She filled her mind with your thoughts, her soul with your presence, and her life with your good things.
Lord, of all the things presented in this life, only one thing is required, and that is you. Of all the service, of all the running, of all the labors, let me never lose this one thing.
I want to sit at your feet, drink from the cup in your hands
lay back against you and breathe, feel your heart-beat.This love is so deep, it’s more than I can stand,
I melt in your peace, it’s overwhelming.
The pressures surround, and the demands intimidate. Had you not been there to speak up to Martha, would she have been bullied into “service” by well-meaning “church-folk”? Even when anointed by costly perfume, you had to stop your own disciples, your own chosen ones, from interferring with her gift of love. She did what she could, Lord.
What is this walk of grace, so hidden from the rest? What is this way of perfection, of union, that so escapes even the diligent, even the seeking? What is it about love, that is so offended by extravagance of devotion?
Why cannot we just see, one glimpse, one touch of your glory, the way you see it, Lord?
Oh, that burning river of fire, of desire, of satisfaction. Oh, that sweet water of your Kingdom, flowing from your throne. I just can’t wait, I just can’t stop, until I have a taste, until I touch, and drink and eat of you. Until I am satisfied in your likeness.
Surely, it is only by your Spirit, by your anointing that we do these things. This power is not of ourselves, but it is a gift from God. As surely as salvation is by grace, you pour out our life expediently.
Oh, Great Father, open unto us this way of life! Remove the veils, the barriers. Let us be moved by love, even your love, as at the first!
Restore unto us, your body, the joy of our salvation, and let us be as little children at your feet.
For surely, the great men of the Earth take their stand, the rulers take their stand together against the Lord, and against His anointed. But, you laugh! You scoff!
Your King is upon Zion, installed upon His holy hill.
We will rejoice together with you, Lord. We will lift up your name forever!
Be praised, oh Most High! Be exalted, Oh King of all the Earth!
For, you have seen the lowly, the afflicted. You have heard the meek and the afflicted. You have heard their cries, and their groans. You have seen their pain.
Let the lowly cry out and say, “The Lord is my strength”, and let the troubled find their refuge in you.
What was this thing called love that brought Mary to your feet? What is this extravagance that invites such “waste”.
The fragrance of your name is a costly oil, and it’s perfume is very great. To waste an entire lifetime upon you would not be enough, Oh great King. The mystery of your name is great, yet it is very close.
Speak again, Oh Mighty One, that your voice might be heard above the waters. Speak, that we might fear and reverence your Holy Name. Remove the veils, the shadows the cloud our way, and prepare us afresh, that we might follow wholly after you.
